Meet the Author
My name is Ian Porteous and I've been LOVING bluegrass music since I was a little kid, hearing Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, and Vince Gill on the radio 📻.
In university I CONSUMED the entire bluegrass collection of CDs, LPs, and cassettes at the public library... whatever I could get my hands on... and I listened, and listened and listened. But it wasn't until I went to my first bluegrass festival that I decided to become a musician. I started with a guitar, then eventually got a banjo at a pawn shop and now I own a couple of mandolins, and play old time fiddle.
Back when I started, I went all the way to Nashville to meet my heroes, like Tony Rice, and John Hartford. After that, I went on to lead an amazing bluegrass band that even played the Blueberry Bluegrass Festival, and the Edmonton Folk Festival. And I have directed a camp for 7 years.
Here are the most important points to my story:

✅ I wasn't a "natural"
✅ I even thought I was tone deaf
Now that I've adventured for 30 years with bluegrass music, as a student, as a teacher, as a banjo, guitar, mandolin, and old time fiddle player... it is because I had those challenges at the beginning, that I know what it's like to finally make the decision to BEGIN. The system I have developed takes into consideration ALL the steps, to alleviate the frustration that can come with beginning to play an instrument. So you can start having FUN a whole lot faster.
